Rice?

Madame de Pompadour's ribbon

As I start the project of rice jewellery, people keep asking me "why rice?"
It all start from the summer project before my MA course in School of Jewellery in Birmingham.
I was asked to use any kinds of materials, to make 10 objects. All I had was nothing. I just left my home country to a brand new place and my tool box was on its way to Birmingham.
Than my mother send me a pack of rice.
It was so precious that I would not even eat them.
Rice was my treasure at the moment.

Embroidery of the sea

"Value" is my main topic of my works.
What make things valuable? and what is so called "valuable" things?
I test my works from different view of social standard.

Brilliantly Birmingham-FLUX Exhibition

My work will be exhibit at MAC! Please check this out!!!

Brilliantly Birmingham was born out of Birmingham’s historic Jewellery Quarter, which employs around 400 people and is home to more than 80 contemporary designer-makers; in addition to hundreds of historic firms. Now an international contemporary festival, Brilliantly Birmingham returns on 27th November for its eleventh year to celebrate the city’s rich heritage and renowned reputation for jewellery design and production. Running until 9th January 2011, the festival will see an array of jewellery talent exhibited across the city including the newly reopened mac at Cannon Hill Park and venues in the Jewellery Quarter.

Growing from an informal group of local designer-makers to a prestigious festival regularly attracting esteemed international designers, this year’s event focuses on the journey of designer-makers and the festival audience. Through a range of exhibitions, seminars and workshops, audiences will be taken on a journey of jewellery-making, from initial concept to finished product.

new works for latest assessment

For this assessment, I put new material and technique into my work. For fixing the fragility, I addes resin with rice, for the replacement of frabic and rice sheets I made previously. I want to keep the delicate detail and the smooth texture of rice.

Garlic....

i quite like blue recently, i can see more blue in my closet, ha.
i also bought a blue silk for doing my work, it's like the chic colour for the comming season---China blue, the latest VOGUE issue has a series photos about it, i like them very much!
Well, i just made an object, an the idea comes from a photo i took in Antwrep, Belgium.

Casting will be the key word for my form research, i think i should pay attention on the feature of rice and develop it in proper way. Also i want to add a little embroidery into my work, or add some pattern on it.
Recently, i keep thinking about the idea of "corner", which is where a connection usually happen between people, and i also thinking about "scene" of some movies, there are always an important scene for the girl and boy in the movie. Maybe i can put the "corner" into the consideration.

I should draw something, but i just can not move the pencil, not in the mood of doing that.......

i finally get started.

Finally, i start my blog, what a big progress!
i've been no mood doing anything for a while, i hope it will be a good start for me :)
since i've been stuck with my work for quite a while, i think i better do somthing.
Maybe not something really special, i just want to simply write down what i'm thinking about my work and any idea about it.
i think it's probably a way i can figure out how to find the way out.
well, hope this will work and i won't be lazy to update this blog.

Talk about something else, last Saturday i visited Derby, a little town i usually pass by when i'm on the train to Nottingham. It's a transfer post for the trains head to northern England.

Taxis here are yellow! which are different from other places in UK, usually, they are black. And there are two traditional markets in Derby, i really like these old market places, full of surprise!
